What Does Gen Z Want in a Career?

Posted by

Gen Z is a group of people who were born from 1996 to 2012. Not only are these people college graduates or professionals, but they are also the backbone of businesses that are moving forward.

Gen Z is not a typical group. They aren’t afraid to say what they think if they think it will help people.

As the first generation to grow up with smartphones and the pandemic, Gen Z’s experiences are different from those of other groups, even Millennials.

Employment Hero put out a study called Gen Z in the Workplace. It says that because they have so many opinions, they have changed the way people look for a balance between work and life.

Here are four things that the people of Gen Z want from their jobs:

1. Balance between life and work

A post on Business.com says that almost half of Gen Z workers are tired of their jobs. On the other hand, just under half say companies do a good job of keeping a healthy amount of work.

Gen Z wants to work somewhere that isn’t bad for their mental health. They are also more open than other groups of workers about their own mental health and needs.

One reason for this is that Gen Z thinks work is less important to who they are. Some people also don’t think it’s worth giving up your peace of mind and soul to do great things in your job.

Since work is less important to them as a part of who they are, most of them would rather get more time off as a reward or honor for their work.

Work-life balance is a very important issue for Gen Z. And it’s right that employers care about how well their workers balance work and life.

2. Pay attention to mental health

Gen Z is the average group of people who talk about the value of mental health at work. The Gen Z In The Workplace report also found that about 75% of Gen Z workers expect their employers to provide some kind of mental health help.

Some Malaysian companies have also started to help their workers with their mental health.

Gen Z wants to work for companies that care about their employees’ mental health and have a good work culture.

3. Balance and flexibility

Even though work-from-home (WFH) or remote work has become popular since the pandemic, Gen Z also gets the benefits of the work culture.

A study by GOBankingRates found that Gen Z is very picky about where they want to work. Less than 29% said that a WFH or remote work method is needed.

Contrary to popular belief, they like going to the office to mingle but they also would like to WFH sometimes. Thus, flexibity is very important to them.

Compared to the older baby boomers and Gen X, they prefer a set work system at the office.

In another poll by GoBankingRates, 56% of Gen Z said that they want or need to work in a more modern and laid-back workplace.

4. Want to be free of debt

Gen Z wants to find high-paying jobs because they are worried about the economy and layoffs, and they want to pay off their school loans.

They are not selfish just because they worry about money. In fact, most of them are motivated not to make the same mistakes or go through the same hard times as their parents or grandparents.

Because the economy is unstable and daily costs are higher than they used to be, they are more driven than ever to find money.

Everyone has a goal they want to reach, like buying a house, a car, going on a trip, etc. So, to make sure they can reach their dream, they look for jobs with better starting salaries.
