The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) expects El Nino to strengthen from 2023 to 2024. This is a chance of over 90%.

A new update from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that El Nino is a natural climate trend. Therefore causes the surface temperatures of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean to rise.

It happens every two to seven years on average and each episode lasts nine to 12 months. El Nino peak is predicted to happen early in 2024. It will have a bigger effect on the country. Moreover, the weather will be hot and dry for a long time.

MetMalaysia said in a statement today that this could lead to a rise in temperature, a drop in rainfall, and transboundary haze, especially if the burning of woods and peatlands is not stopped.
