A geologist is a scientist who studies the Earth, its composition, structure, processes and its history. They analyse rocks, minerals and fossils to understand the planet’s history and to uncover fossilised artefacts. Geologists could also conduct fieldwork, collect samples and use tools and techniques to understand geological data. They play an important role in industries such as mining, oil and gas exploration, environmental management and natural hazard assessment. Their work has contributed so much just for us to understand the Earth’s past, present and future of the Earth.

 WHAT DOES A GEOLOGIST DO?

The daily duties of a geologist may differ depending on the workplace. For example, geologists may teach at a university or they might even work for an environmental agency. They could also work for a metal production company where they’ll focus on quality control or an oil production company where they’ll be evaluating the performance of the machinery. A geologist’s job duties depend on the requirements of each position. 

JOB BRIEF

We are looking for geologists to analyse geological data and plan our geology-related projects.

In this job, you will get to visit sites of interest to study the earth and work on extractions and minings. Therefore, this means you will need excellent organisational and project management skills. Next, you should be comfortable with data and geologic modelling and also technological tools. Teamwork and communication skills are also important since you will collaborate with various engineers, geophysicists and other scientists.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Plan geology projects such as oil extraction, water pipe construction and field sampling events
  • Survey sites and create logs such as a borehole and maps using GIS software
  • Gather and analyse geological data
  • Coordinate research programs
  • Examine the composition of samples and specimens
  • Measure and test fossils, rocks, soil, ores and other materials with the proper equipment
  • Write a report on the findings
  • Conduct quality control on the suitability of materials such as metals for construction purposes and inspect projects
  • Study sites for developments, formations, hazards and composition
  • Investigate and evaluate natural resource deposits
  • Consult on various geology-related issues such as waste management, resource management, gas extraction techniques and more
  • Ensure environmental and other regulations are met in construction and production projects

REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS

  • Proven experience as a geologist
  • Experience with various geological techniques like mining, boring and numerical modelling
  • Experience using geology software such as ArcGIS and Rockware and other data and modelling tools
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations
  • Good knowledge of the attributes of ores, soil, minerals and other materials
  • Ability to handle and analyse dare and 3D models
  • An analytical mind
  • attention to detail
  • Great communication skills for both written and spoken
  • Organisation and teamwork ability
  • Degree in Geology or Geoscience

SALARY RANGE

The average monthly salary for a geologist in Malaysia ranges from RM 6500 to RM 7300.
