WHAT IS SPF?
Sun protection factor (SPF) represents a sunscreen’s ability to protect against a specific portion of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. These rays are responsible for sunburns and skin cancer. There are two portions of UV lights and those are UVC rays which don’t pass the earth’s atmosphere and there’s UVA rays which are responsible for skin cancers as well as aging. A sunscreen must have a broad spectrum in order to protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
WHAT SUNSCREEN SHOULD I BUY?
For everyday use, pick a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. However, if you spend time outdoors, it is better to choose a product with SPF 60 or greater. In reality, most people don’t use sunscreen as much as they should. Therefore, this higher concentration of SPF will compensate for the lack of application.
HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN DO I NEED?
To protect your face, neck, arms and legs, you will need about 1 ounce of sun protection. You can squeeze this amount of your hand and completely lather it with your palm.
To protect only your face and neck, half a teaspoon is enough.
WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANCE OF SUNSCREEN?
- Prevent Sunburns
Sunscreen acts as a barrier that absorbs and reflects UV radiation which will prevent sunburn. Sunburn is extremely painful but it also increases the risk of developing skin cancer, especially in cases of severe or repeated burns.
- Reduces Skin Cancer Risk
Regular use of sun protection can significantly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer such as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. These UV rays damage the skin cells and over time, this severe damage can lead to the formation of cancerous cells.
- Minimises Premature Aging
Exposure to the sun’s UV rays accelerates the aging process of the skin, causing wrinkles and fine lines while reducing age spots. Sun protection helps to shield the skin from these harmful rays and help maintain a youthful appearance.
- Protects Against UV-Induced Skin Conditions
Sunscreen helps prevent various UV-induced skin conditions like actinic keratosis, precancerous skin lesion and polymorphic light eruption (PLE) which is an allergic reaction to sunlight.
- Prevents Photosensitivity Reactions
Some individuals are sensitive to sunlight and may experience photosensitivity reactions, resulting in rashes, redness or hives when exposed to the sun. Sun protection can provide protection for those with such conditions.
- Maintains Even Skin Tone
Sunscreen can help prevent the formation of dark spots and hyperpigmentation caused by UV exposure which will then lead to more even skin tone.
- Promotes Overall Skin Health
By protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, sunscreen helps to maintain the overall health and integrity of the skin.
