Still, Apple’s adoption of this standard is usually good news, even though the company was forced to do so by a European Union rule that all mobile devices must use USB-C by the end of 2024. You won’t have to keep a separate cord for your Apple devices. Instead, you can use a USB-C cable to charge your iPhone 15, Nintendo Switch, Bose headphones, and Windows laptop.

Why USB-C for iPhone 15 is a brilliant idea?
If you plan to buy the iPhone 15, finding a cable to charge your phone will be easy, and you’ll need fewer cables. You probably already have a USB-C cord for your laptop or earbuds, so you can use the same one for all your devices. Even the best USB-C cables aren’t too expensive if you need to replace your Lightning cables.
This is what the laws of the European Union are for. If there is only one standard port, people don’t have to buy different cables for each gadget. It also means there will be less need to make, make, and ship wires. Most people shouldn’t be affected by this law in their day-to-day lives. The law’s primary goal is to change how companies build goods in the future.
It’s too soon to tell if Apple’s decision to put USB-C on the iPhone is a long-term plan or if the company will get rid of the port in favor of wireless charging. The law is only for gadgets that can be charged with a wired cable. Apple has a history of taking away ports that people love, like when it took the headphone jack off the iPhone 7.
What do you do with an old iPhone?
Since Apple’s newest phones no longer have Lightning ports, and the company just added a USB-C port to its AirPods Pro earbuds, you can expect Apple to stop selling new cables and products that work with Lightning in the coming months.
But there are still over a billion iPhones in the world with Lightning ports, so you’ll probably be able to find Lightning cables and other devices for years on Amazon and other shopping sites. Still, based on how long you plan to keep your current iPhone, you should buy an extra Lightning cable the next time you go shopping if they become harder to find.
Other iPhone buyers won’t notice any difference from this change, though. Nothing will change about how your devices work.

You might wonder if the day’s news is big enough for you to buy a new iPhone. We disagree. Apple has made other changes to the iPhone 15 that might make it more appealing than what you have. Still, if your current smartphone works for you, we don’t see enough reason to get the newest iPhone. The iPhone 15 is easier to charge now that it has USB-C, but that’s about it.
