It’s harder than ever to just stop and take a break in the world we live in today even during a vacation. We can’t settle down when we do because our minds are so used to being “on” that we’ve forgotten how to turn them off.
Especially when work is easily accessible through our mobile phones, getting a break is even harder now. We may not always be able to unplug. Still, we can work to be intentional with our time, enjoy the place we are in and appreciate the people we are there to enjoy it with.
Here are 4 ways to disconnect from work while you’re on vacation:
1. Trust your team
To enjoy your vacation, you must trust that your team can handle things while you’re gone. Let yourself trust them with the tasks you’ve left behind. You can also decide what an emergency is before you leave, giving your vacation clear limits.
With this in place, you won’t be bothered for no reason or come back to find that something terrible has happened while you were away. Also, plan all meetings, emails, and deadlines before your time off. This way, you’ll know you won’t miss anything important.
2. Unrealistic goals lead to failure.
Don’t set yourself up to fail by making rules that can’t be broken. Don’t say you wouldn’t check your email or answer the phone. You may need to do it, and it is okay.
When you’re on vacation, you may have to check your email or take a work call, and that’s fine—setting rules that can’t be broken leads to hurt feelings. Instead, be honest with the people you’re going on vacation with about how much work you may have to do while you’re away.

3. Set a time limit.
Suppose you have to work while on holiday—schedule time to do it. Ensure everyone on the trip knows these times so they don’t wait for you while you work in your hotel room. Still, if you decide on certain work hours, you should stick to them.
Try not to let any calls go on too long or get you so involved that you don’t look up until noon when you said you’d be done at ten. The people we are with deserve to have their time honored, and we don’t want our work to get in the way of their vacation.
4. Plan time to unwind.
Sometimes, even our time off feels like work. Not because we’re always working but because we plan events right after each other as we do with meetings.
There’s nothing wrong with planning things to do, but we should also set aside time to chill out. Most of us have too much going on in our lives. We run from the gym to work to happy hour with friends.
If we don’t set aside time during our holiday to do nothing, we might never stop and take a breath. Give yourself time to do nothing. You’ll enjoy your time with “something” much more if you give yourself time to do nothing.
