6 WAYS TO GET YOUR FIRST JOB

Posted by

Every fresh graduate’s biggest fear is applying for their first job because of how competitive employment seeking is. That being said, you have to be smart about it if you want to land your dream job.

Here are tips to help you land your first job:

  1. Identify Interests and Skills

Access your interests and skills so that you can see what field of employment best suits you. By doing so, it helps you determine whether you can do well in the job. Take into consideration your past education, hobbies or any relevant experiences you’ve had.

2. Set Realistic Goals

Realistic goals will prevent you from being disappointed. First jobs are everything but well paid since to be able to compensate the employee appropriately, they must first be able to demonstrate how their work benefits the company. Recognising that, while being underpaid, entry-level positions for college graduates with little experience provide valuable experience and growth opportunities.

3. Prepare Resume and Online Presence

Create a well-written resume that highlights your skills, education and any relevant experiences. Customise your resume to the specific job you are applying for. You can connect with industry professionals by establishing a professional online presence on platforms such as LinkedIn. These platforms are used by many employers to connect with potential candidates.

4. Network Around

Ask your family, friends, teachers and professionals in your desired field. Career fairs and events are a great way for college graduates to network with the right people. Networking can lead to job opportunities and provide valuable information about the industry.

5. Job Search and Send Applications

Job search platforms such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor and Indeed make it easier for you to apply for jobs in the comfort of your own home. You can create profiles, set up job alerts and send in applications. You can include your customised resume in your applications to boost the likelihood of getting an interview.

6. Prepare for Interviews

Practise common interview questions and prepare appropriate responses. Research the company and the role you are interviewing for. Dress professionally and always arrive early for the interview. Bring copies of any related documents such as certificates, resume and a portfolio if asked.
