Apple says that StandBy is a new full-screen view that shows information that you can see quickly and from a distance when an iPhone is on its side and charging. The interface can change to offer different kinds of clocks, calendars, favorite photos, weather reports, controls for playing music, widgets, and more.

StandBy is for an iPhone charging on a nightstand, kitchen table, or desk. It works with Live Activities, Siri, incoming calls, and larger notifications. The feature also works with the always-on screen on the iPhone 14 Pro.

On the iPhone, interactive apps can now be found on the Home Screen, the Lock Screen, and the new StandBy view. Apple gave examples of what interactive widgets can be used for, like marking a reminder as done, playing or pausing a song or podcast, and controlling accessories in the Home app. As third-party apps are updated to support interactive widgets in the coming months, there will be many more options.

Up until now, Home Screen widgets didn’t do much because Apple didn’t let apps add scrolling, buttons, or animations.

7. Improved Autocorrect

Apple says that iOS 17 has a state-of-the-art language model for predicting words that will improve the iPhone’s autocorrect. When you make a mistake while typing, machine learning on the device will smartly fix it more accurately than ever before. Also, users will now get suggestions for text as they type, and they can add words or full lines by tapping the space bar.

On iOS 17, autocorrection has a new look that quickly highlights a changed word. When you tap on an underlined word, the original word you wrote is shown. This makes it easy to quickly undo the change. Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi, said the system is made for “those times when you just want to type a ducking word.” It will also learn the user’s typing habits over time and avoid some corrections.

8. Apple Maps Offline

With iOS 17, Apple Maps can now download maps when you’re not connected to the internet. This is a key feature that Google Maps already had. Apple says that when an iPhone is not connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network, users can still download a specific map area, use turn-by-turn navigation, see when they will arrive, find places, and more.

9. Stickers Drawer

Apple has made it easier to talk to Siri on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, HomePod, and the new AirPods Pro by simplifying the voice order. Users no longer have to say “Hey Siri” to start the voice assistant. Instead, they can say “Siri” and give multiple commands without saying “Siri” again.
