Male Fertility Issues in Malaysia Are Alarming

On 5 April, the Dewan Negara was told that the number of men in this country with fertility issues is worrying.

Aiman Athirah Sabu, the Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister, said data from the National Population and Family Development Board showed abnormal results in 60% of sperm tests which causes fertility issues in men.

This is a direct cause of the rise in problems with getting pregnant among married couples in Malaysia.

At the same time, our country’s birth rate has been decreasing over the last 40 years. The Department of Statistics Malaysia says that every married woman will have 1.7 children in 2021.

Aiman Athirah said the Men Wellness Clinic opened at the board’s fertility clinic in the federal capital in October last year.

This year, the service will be spread to six other LPPKN clinics in the peninsula and Sarawak.

This clinic gives health screenings, advice on sexual problems and healthy lifestyles, and medical treatment to help people get pregnant.

The board has offered treatment to help married couples with fertility problems since 1979. The subfertility clinic in Penang is for the northern zone. Also, Kuala Lumpur for the central zone, and Johor for the southern zone.

Aiman Athirah says the program has led to 6,000 pregnancies and 4,000 births. Which is about the same as foreign fertility treatment centers.

There are several other things that cause the birth rate to go down. For instance, lifestyle changes, high costs, career, and also late marriage.
