The Melaka government is set to build 40 Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQs) by 2023 where it will be accommodating more than 40,000 foreign workers, said state Heath, Human Resources and Unity committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem.

According to a report by Bernama, chairman Ngwe noted that there are 15 current CLQs which can house up to 9,359 workers is still not enough as the number of foreign workers in Melaka, especially within the industrial area, is around 63,500 workers.

Therefore, the state government is currently discussing with developers to build more CLQs around Melaka, said the chairman.

He added that addition of CLQs comes in line with the Melaka government’s initiative to bring in more investments for the state, noting that by having adequate and proper workers’ housing will increase their productivity.

In June of this year, Selangor State Development Corporation celebrated a ceremony of a CLQ in Bandar Sultan Suleiman which is expected to be completed in the next three years.

This CLQ will be on top of a 4.35 acres land that will consist of 336 fully-furnished units. These units will be equipped with basic amenities such as light fixtures, fans, electric stoves, tables, chairs and beds and mattresses.

Each of these units will have three rooms, a single bathroom and a dedicated dining area. In addition, the developers are also planning to provide a variety of common areas such as a food court, prayer rooms and space for indoor activities.

These units will have the capacity to accommodate 5,712 individuals with a maximum of 17 workers per unit. As a whole, the project is estimated to cost around RM120mn in construction costs only.
