Olive oil is the basis of the Mediterranean and Cretan diets. Many scientific research have shown its brain and heart benefits and lifespan improvement.

Recent scientific study shows that olive oil is mainly made up of fats that are good for your health. It has antioxidants, monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. However, the exact mix can change depending on the climate or type of olive.

So, you don’t have to eat it all day long, but it’s a good idea to include it in your daily diet. 

Here are 3 good reasons why you should eat olive oil:

1. Less likely to get dementia

A new study on was shown last month at Nutrition 2023, the yearly meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.

After looking at the diet surveys and death records of more than 90,000 Americans over 30 years, researchers think that people who eat more than half a tablespoon daily may have a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia than those who eat little or none.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says more than 55 million people worldwide have dementia.

The dietary standards recommend eating vegetable oils like olive oil, which may benefit your heart and brain.

It is healthier than margarine and commercial mayonnaise and may reduce the chance of fatal dementia.

However, this observational study doesn’t prove that it directly lowers the risk of dying from dementia. Still, the results support the idea that it can help people eat healthier.

2. Olive oil keeps the heart healthy.

A study released last year in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology looked at the subject differently. It found that olive oil may help protect the heart from certain diseases.

Over 60,000 women and over 31,000 men who didn’t have heart disease at the start of the study were watched for 28 years. Every four years, they fill out a questionnaire about what they ate.

The study found that people who ate more than 7g of olive oil every day, which is again more than half a tablespoon, had a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (19%), cancer (17%), and neurodegenerative disease (29%), compared to people who rarely or never ate it.

The results support current dietary recommendations to eat more olive oil and other unsaturated vegetable oils.

According to this study, people who ate more olive oil were also more likely to be physically active, less likely to smoke, and more likely to eat more fruits and veggies.

3. Longer life expectancy

The same study from 2022 found that eating a lot of olive oil—more than half a tablespoon a day—could help people live longer. This is especially likely if olive oil is used instead of butter, margarine, or mayonnaise.

At the end of the study, the scientists say that olive oil’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties could help keep people healthy significantly.
