10 MENTAL HEALTH EFFECTS OF SOCIAL ISOLATION

Social isolation is a state where an individual has limited or no contact with other people which will then lead to a lack of physical interactions and connections. It is when a person feels isolated and disconnected from people around them. Isolation can be both voluntary and involuntary and it can also either be a temporary or prolonged state.

Voluntary social isolation may happen when a person chooses to distance themselves from other people intentionally. They might do this because they prefer solitude or time alone due to personal preferences, introversion or they need the space for self-reflection. Voluntary isolation can be a healthy choice for some individuals because it allows them to recharge and relax.  

In contrast, involuntary social isolation happens when an individual lacks social contact due to external factors that are out of their control. These external factors are such as illness or disability, discrimination, social anxiety and many more.

Here are some mental health effects of social isolation:

1. Depression 

Extended social isolation is strongly associated with an increased risk of depression. For example, this was seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The feelings of loneliness, sadness and extreme hopelessness can overwhelm isolated people. This makes it difficult for them to find a sense of joy or interest in activities they once enjoyed. 

2. Anxiety

Social isolation can trigger or worsen anxiety disorders. Isolated individuals may worry excessively about situations, fear judgment or experience social phobia which will lead to avoiding any interactions altogether. 

3. Increased Stress

Lack of support and human connection can elevate and reduce stress levels. Socially isolated people may find it hard to cope and deal with life stressors which will then affect their physical and mental health. 

4. Cognitive Decline

Social interactions play an important role in stimulating the brain and keeping all cognitive abilities sharp. Prolonged isolation can lead to the decline of cognitive abilities and increases the risk of serious conditions such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. 

5. Sleep Disturbances

Social isolation can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to difficulties falling or staying asleep. The lack of daily routines from interactions with others may contribute to sleep disturbances. 

6. Substance Abuse

Some people may become dependent on substances such as alcohol or drugs as a way for them to cope with the distress of isolation. Substance abuse can lead to further mental health problems and worsen feelings of isolation.

7. Low Self-Esteem

Social connections often contribute to positive feelings such as self-worth and belonging. Without validation and support from other people, isolated individuals may feel low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. 

8. Suicidal Thoughts

Prolonged isolation has been seen to increase the risk of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The overwhelming feelings of loneliness and hopelessness can lead people to consider ending their lives. 

9. Decreased Empathy

Social isolation can lead to a reduction in empathy and social skills. This is because these individuals may become less attuned to the emotions and needs of others.

10. Agitation & Irritability

Isolation and loneliness can lead to feelings of agitation and irritability. The lack of interactions may make individuals feel extra sensitive to minor stressors. 

In conclusion, we must understand the effects of isolation on your physical and mental health. Additionally, the duration of when that person experienced isolation plays a significant role in determining the seriousness.
